The priority registration period for trademark holders ended on June 15, 2015 with the start of the priority registration period for entrepreneurs, which is ongoing.

During the second phase of the priority registration period for entrepreneurs, any person seeking to develop an initiative based on the publishing of Frogans sites can register dedicated Frogans networks with a network name of his choice and Frogans addresses of public Frogans networks with a site name of his choice, e.g. a generic term, a geographical name or a community name.

Trademark holders can still register dedicated Frogans networks whose network name corresponds to their trademark during the priority registration period for entrepreneurs.

  1. Why is the Frogans project important for intellectual property counsels and lawyers?

This is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor for the next major change for the Internet: the introduction of Frogans sites.

Frogans sites provide a new, secure communications area for publishing content. Frogans sites are accessible using a new type of identifier: Frogans addresses.

Just like domain names, Frogans addresses will be a key component of your clients' online presence. Your clients are likely to turn to you for advice and to protect their brands.

Only FCR account administrators can register Frogans addresses for their clients in the FCR (Frogans Core Registry). Intellectual property counsels and lawyers are especially well-qualified to become FCR account administrators and offer value-added services based on Frogans addresses.

  2. How are brands protected?

If a trademark holder registers a dedicated Frogans network such as My-Brand* now, the trademark holder will secure its exclusive for the duration of the initial period of the registration that it chooses, as well as for subsequent renewals.

The OP3FT has set up a legal framework to protect trademark holders from abusive registrations of Frogans addresses and Frogans networks. The Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy for Frogans Addresses (UDRP-F) defines proceedings directly inspired by the UDRP proceedings set up by ICANN. Two Dispute Resolution Service Providers have already been approved by the OP3FT: FORUM and the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre.

  3. What is the benefit for a brand holder to hold its own dedicated Frogans network?

There are two benefits for your client to hold a dedicated Frogans network. For example, if your client owns the trademark "Acme":

As stated in Introduction of the "Rules for the registration of a Dedicated Frogans Network during the priority registration period for entrepreneurs", your client has two possibilities for registering Frogans addresses:

  4. What are my costs and what can I charge my clients by becoming an FCR account administrator?

The fees charged by the FCR Operator to FCR account administrators are set forth in Fees for the Addressing Services Provided by the FCR Operator to FCR Account Administrators. For example, an FCR account administrator pays the FCR Operator 1,500 euros per year for the registration of a dedicated Frogans network (such as My-Brand*) and 6 euros per year for the registration of a Frogans address.

You are free to set the fees you charge your clients, depending on the added value of the services you provide.

  5. Will registration fees come down in the future? Won't this present a barrier to entry for brand or non-brand registrants?

There are no plans to change the fees in the future. Brand or non-brand registrants can register their own dedicated Frogans network, for the same fee, if they wish. People and organizations with smaller budgets can of course register an address in the Public Frogans network (frogans*) at a lower cost.

The fee charged for registering a Frogans address is comparable to the fee for registering a domain name. The fee charged for registering a dedicated Frogans network should be considered in light of the promotional benefits it represents to the content publisher. Note that unlike for gTLDs, there are no additional back-end registry costs involved: those costs are included in the fees paid to the FCR Operator, which ensures the resolution of all Frogans addresses on the Internet worldwide.

  6. How can I become an FCR account administrator at no charge?

Simply go to https://accadmin.api.fcr.frogans/ and follow the step-by-step instructions. No accreditation required.

Once you have opened your FCR account, you can credit your account and start registering Frogans networks and Frogans addresses for your clients. Note that the process for crediting your FCR account requires a bank transfer in euros, which may take a few days to complete.

All the contractual and documentary resources for FCR account administrators are available at the Web site of the FCR Operator.

  7. Do I need to sign a contract?

By opening an FCR account, you must accept the terms of the FCR Account Administrator Agreement with the FCR Operator and check a box to that effect when you open your FCR account.

Furthermore, as an FCR account administrator, you must comply with the Frogans Technology User Policy drawn up and adopted by the OP3FT, the non-profit organization responsible for developing the Frogans technology in the form of an open standard for the Internet.

  9. To whom can I offer my registration-management services?

Any type of client or prospect can register their Frogans addresses and Frogans networks with you, in order to prepare their digital strategy for publishing Frogans sites.

First comes a two-month priority registration period for trademark holders. This period is followed by a priority registration period for entrepreneurs, when anyone will be able to register any term as a dedicated Frogans network. Finally, it will be possible to publish Frogans sites and make them available to the general public.

  10. How do I explain to my trademark holder clients why they should register a Frogans network now?

Clients can register a dedicated Frogans network now in order to lay the groundwork for a new digital strategy encompassing Frogans sites.

Trademark holders can also ensure that no one else with a similar trademark registers it first.

In order to avoid additional costs for trademark holders, the duration of the period between the registration date and the date when it is possible to publish Frogans sites on the Internet is added, at no additional cost, to the chosen duration.

  11. Can you give us a concise definition of the Frogans project, and how I can market it to my clients?

The Frogans project aims to change the Internet by introducing a new type of site which anyone can create and publish on the Internet: Frogans sites. Frogans sites will load fast and offer user-friendly navigation and innovative creative features on any connected device.

Just to make things crystal clear:

Neither the OP3FT nor the FCR Operator offer services for designing, developing, or hosting Frogans sites. Those types of services, and many others, are provided by members of the Internet ecosystem.

You can participate in the Frogans project now by becoming an FCR Account Administrator and providing value-added services to your clients worldwide for the registration and management of their Frogans addresses and Frogans networks.

Your clients can participate in the Frogans project by making use of your value-added services and advice for registering their Frogans addresses and Frogans networks.

Your clients that are brand owners can start now by registering a dedicated Frogans network during the priority registration period for trademark holders. 12. Does ICANN support these new Internet addresses?

Yes. Frogans addresses are resolved using underlying services provided via the .frogans generic top-level domain (gTLD), which is delegated by ICANN to the OP3FT.

However, Frogans addresses are not domain names using the .frogans extension. Frogans addresses are a new type of Internet address designed for a new type of content: Frogans sites, accessible from Frogans addresses such as My-Network*My-Site.

  13. At a time when new gTLDs are rolling out, how will Frogans addresses be promoted?

The Frogans technology enables the implementation of a new software layer on the Internet, called the Frogans layer, alongside other existing software layers such as E-mail or the Web. Each layer has its own addressing system which introduces a distinctive pattern. The Web uses URLs (like http://www.specifdomainname.com/news/); E-mail addresses include the @ sign as a separator character; and Frogans addresses include the * (asterisk) as a separator character.

The primary promoters of Frogans addresses to end users will be the content publishers themselves who have created a Frogans site and need to promote it. They can include the address of their Frogans site on their Web pages, in their blogs, in e-mail messages, in online and offline advertising, on business cards, in QR codes, etc. As a result, Frogans addresses will be referenced automatically by Web search engines, and will appear as a hyperlink in the search engine response.

Users can also directly enter Frogans addresses in the Frogans Player software in order to access a Frogans site. Frogans addresses are not entered in the address bar of a Web browser.

Back to the top of the FAQ

  14. In terms of the .frogans TLD, what purposes will this be put to?

Frogans addresses are not domain names in the .frogans TLD registry. The purpose of the .frogans TLD is to ensure the security, stability and reliability of the Frogans technology. Domain names in the .frogans TLD registry will not be made available to third parties; for further information on the .frogans TLD, see nic.frogans

Back to the top of the FAQ

  16. What are the projections of the OP3FT concerning the number of registrations of Frogans networks and Frogans addresses?

The OP3FT model is not based on registration peaks created by “sunrise periods”, but rather it calls for a gradual, progressive growth of Frogans address and Frogans network registrations over the long term. It is expected that more and more people will progressively register Frogans networks and Frogans addresses once Frogans sites can be published and made available online.

  17. What is the OP3FT doing to promote the Frogans project among the global Internet audience?

As part of its public-interest mission, the OP3FT has been working for years to develop a broadly-based international ecosystem:

Beyond OP3FT's activities, many companies and entrepreneurs in the ecosystem are promoting the technology, mostly in their own interest. The OP3FT expects the service and content offerings of those businesses to be major promotional vectors for the Frogans technology.
